Helping You Navigate Real Estate

Termites, Termites, Termites

So, as my personal home renovation saga continues, I decided to finally drywall my laundry room, attached to my detached garage…..are you still with me?  Anyway, in order to drywall my laundry room, I have to move things to my garage, which in turns requires more space than I have.  I figured I would replace the shelves in the garage with new ones to create a sense of order and open up more garage space.  This is the moment that Pandora’s Box was opened. Taking down the wallboard revealed termite damage so severe that some beams were literally, termites holding hands.  So a job that should have taken a couple hours has been ongoing for the last 4 weeks.  This is how it goes with old homes sometimes, you get what you get, but at least they are easy to repair if you have a few skills and ton of patience.  For those of you new to Florida, this is subterranean termite damage.  These termites build mud tubes from the ground up into your structure, eating everything made of wood at a voracious rate of up to 1 foot per DAY.   These differ from drywood termites that, as a colony, can eat a foot or two of wood per YEAR.   In the end, I know the work is done correctly and at a much lower cost than hiring a professional, so at least that’s something to smile about….Enjoy the photos.
